1.   研究生经历

Ø      Important to select schools, advisors, and research interests.  Foster healthy relationships with advisor and committee members.

Ø      择校，择导师和研究方向均非常重要。建立与导师和研究委员会导师的关系

Ø      Both research paper quality and quantity matter.

Ø      研究论文的数量与质量均非常重要

Ø      Broaden skill base.  For example:

Ø      掌握广泛的个人技巧。例如：

·        Improve oral and written English skills.  Read broadly and routinely.  Read a New York Times editorial article and paraphrase it every day. 

·        提高英语口语和写作的能力。广泛和经常的阅读，例如尝试阅读纽约时报的社评并且用自己的话转述

·        Improve oral presentation skills.  Practice, practice, practice.  This is a single area Chinese descendants need to improve most. 

·        提高口语演讲的能力。练习，练习，再练习。这一方面是中国学生最需要训练之处

·        Learn outside of majors.  e.g., finance, law, business management.

·        尝试学习学科外的知识，例如金融，法律， 和商业管理

·        Join clubs and do voluntary work to improve teamwork and leadership skills.  The work is good for the cause and yourself.

·        Think like an American, act like an America, not to think that I am a Chinese.  Otherwise you separate and exclude yourself in the first place.

2        Look for Jobs

Ø      Appreciate the difference in academic and industrial jobs and decide.  Academic jobs are more on your own (independent), whereas industrial jobs require both individual contributions and teamwork efforts.  The following is tuned to industrial jobs but is in large part applicable to any job.

Ø      分析学术圈和工业圈工作的不同然后做决定。学术圈的工作强调个人独立性，而工业界的工作要求个人工作和团队合作。以下的要点着重强调工业界但同样适用于任何工作

Ø      Before the interview: Be prepared.

Ø      面试前做好充分准备

·        Know the job responsibilities, duties, and requirements.

·        了解职务的责任，职责，和要求

·        Research the company and products and services. 

·        研究公司，及其产品和服务

·        Research interviewers about their educational backgrounds, careers and responsibilities

·        研究面试人的教育背景，事业生涯，和职责

·        Prepare resume.  Use key, eye-catching words to highlight achievement and skills.  Ask people to proof read.  Customize resumes for different jobs. One size does not fit all.

·        准备个人简历。使用关键的引人注意的字词强调成绩和技能。请他人修改，对于不同的工作定制不同的简历。绝对不能一份多投

·        Cover letter summarizes achievements and skills that match job requirements.  Customer oriented. Grammatically correct.

·        说明信应当概述吻合职业要求的成绩和技能，应当面前客户。文法正确

·        Prepare a list of questions and answers: e.g., What questions the interviewers might ask and what questions you want to ask.

·        准备一个问题清单和答案，包括什么样的问题是面世人会问的，什么样的问题是你想回答的。

General interviewer’s questions, such as what do you know about our company? Why do you interview for this job?  What are your achievements?  What are your strengths?  Give me an example of how you found a problem and how resolved it?  How do you resolve a conflict?

面试人常问问题：例如你对公司了解多少？你为什么面试这个工作？你以往的成绩是什么？你的强项是什么？给我一些例子说明你是如何发现问题然后解决的？你是如何解决冲突的？

·        Get to know local events.

·        了解当地的时事

Ø      Participate in campus interviews.  Attend job fairs.  Use network.  Respond to advertisements.  During the interview: Be yourself and try to relax.

·        Wear professionally.

·        Firm and warm handshake.  Look into eyes.  Be confident and smile.

·        握手应当坚定热情，正视面试人眼睛，自信，保持微笑

·        Listen carefully and understand questions and answer appropriately.  If you do not understand the question, ask it to be repeated.

·        听清楚问题，理解后合适的回答。如果没有完全理解问题，请求重复。

·        Give an impressive seminar.  Talk about what the issues were, how you analyzed and resolved them, and do not forget to give credit to your collaborators.  Show your critical thinking and problem-solving skills.  Be enthusiastic about your work.  Tell a story; do not give a survey like presentation or memorize slides.  Speak loud and a little slower.  Engage eye contact and use gestures.  It is always helpful to practice in front of mirror or to a group before the interview.

·        Write a thank you note right away.  Reinforce your interest if you want the job.

·        Only take the job you like, not for the sake of finding a job.  Take it from your heart.  Then you will do it from your heart and do it well.

·        Realize the pros and cons of small and large companies.  Always give your best shot, learn and contribute as much as you can.

In sum, know your stuff, know the people, show your stuff, be yourself, and say thank you.
